The Discworld® Range I've always loved Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. You could say that I got into them right at the beginning just about when The Light Fantastic came out in Hardback. I bought that first not realising it was a sequel, and had a devil of a job getting hold of a copy of The Colour of Magic. Eventually I found one in an obscure bookshop after a few failed attempts in the more established bookshops. One Lady shop assistant looked down her nose at me through her half rimmed glasses and bellowed ‘Terry who???' when I enquired as to whether she had a copy in stock or not, how things change. I started reading Colour of Magic and was instantly a fan, it was just so different and so funny compared to anything else I'd ever read, Terry's a great author and I feel very privileged to have a licence to produce items from his books. For me Terry has a great way of describing things, I instantly get a picture in my mind of how, from my point of view, they might look (that said, I don't always get it right!). The Iconograph was a very prominent vision and I had a niggling for ages to make one. My chance came when Clarecraft had their first event back in the summer of 1995. They were running an art competition and I had some modelling clay and some spare bits of wood lying around so I went for it. Three days and two messy rooms later (I truly am a messy worker, I start on a table run out of room, move onto the floor by the table and run out of room, move across the floor filling it up as I go and out of the door, I was working in the bedroom, so it was lucky I didn't fall down the stairs!) Anyway, to recap, three days and two messy rooms later, I'd finished. So it was off to Clarecraft, exhibit the Iconograph and win first prize in the art competition, Terry loved it and it's now in his collection. I was a little bit excited! As a result of my Iconographic success I managed to get a licence from Terry to make Discworld artefacts, the first being Deaths clock. When I first started producing these I sculpted the original (more mess), had them cast elsewhere and had them delivered unpainted. With no workshop or studio, I would have to spray paint or airbrush them in the back garden. This was no joke in the frosty depths of winter or worse in high winds. I still can picture black paint leaving the airbrush and going sideways instead of forwards. Luckily things have moved on and I've now got somewhere warm and wind free to do all my painting. Next came my new version of the Iconograph. This has been described by Terry's agent as a labour of love. It took ages to sculpt and is a nightmare to cast and takes a lifetime to paint. All that said, after all this time, I still rate it as my personal favourite Discworld piece. The rest of the range followed and I hope to be adding to it in the future. I hope you enjoy them.
